Outpatient Anorectal Surgery Pre-Operative Instructions
You are scheduled for outpatient surgery. The hospital or surgery center will usually call you the day before surgery with the exact time, as it may change.
Unless instructed differently by the hospital or surgery center, please arrive 1-2 hours prior to your scheduled procedure time.
NOTE: You must have someone to drive you home after your surgery.
You will not be legally allowed to operate machinery, including automobiles for the remainder of the day of your procedure.
Please inform the doctor if you are taking any blood thinners, diuretics, or diabetes medicines as changing or stopping these medications may be necessary.
You may need to be seen by your primary care doctor and have lab work done prior to your procedure. Dr. Bazalgette will let you know if this is the case.
- Please have a physical exam done by your primary physician if over 65 (or requested by Dr. Bazalgette).
- If over 60, you will need a recent EKG (done within the last 6 months).
Before the procedure is done, you should do a bowel cleansing with enemas and/or oral laxatives. Please use the following:
- Fleet Phosphate Enema – use 1 hour before leaving your home on the day of surgery. Follow the instructions on the box.
- Magnesium Citrate – 10 oz bottle. The day prior to surgery eat a normal breakfast & lunch, then begin clear liquids by mouth until the morning of the operation and do not eat any solid food, protein or dairy products until after the operation. At 5pm the night before surgery, drink the entire bottle of Magnesium Citrate (tip: be home when you start!).
You may continue drinking clear liquids on the morning of your operation up until 4 hours prior to the surgery time. After that, drink NOTHING AT ALL, or the anesthesiologist will cancel the case!
I will give you detailed post-op instructions when you leave the surgery center after your operation, as well as any necessary prescriptions. If you have questions please call well ahead of the date of the operation and we should be able to clear up your concerns quite easily.
